Why Is My RV Air Conditioner Not Cooling?
A practical guide to RV A/C symptoms, from a fan that runs warm to a unit that freezes or trips the breaker.

When an RV air conditioner is not cooling, the first impulse is often to turn the thermostat lower. That rarely identifies the problem. A rooftop unit needs a healthy power supply, a call for cooling, sufficient airflow, and a working refrigeration and heat-rejection system.
Start by describing what the unit does
Does the fan run? Does the compressor start after a delay? Does the air feel cool for a few minutes and then warm up? Is there ice on the coil or water on the ceiling? These details are more useful than the thermostat number alone.

Check the easy airflow items safely
Turn the unit off before removing a filter or looking at the return-air area. Dust, pet hair, and a blocked return can reduce airflow enough to cause freezing or poor cooling. Make sure supply vents are open and that furniture or stored items are not covering the return.
Rooftop A/C units also need to reject heat outside. Leaves, nests, and debris around the condenser can reduce performance. Do not open the electrical compartment or touch the capacitor unless you are trained to work on the equipment safely.
Do not ignore RV power quality
An air conditioner is a high-draw load. A weak pedestal, damaged cord, loose inlet, undersized extension, or overloaded circuit can cause hard starting, breaker trips, or poor performance. Note whether the symptom changes at another known-good power source, but do not experiment with unsafe connections.
